LOVE TO THE RESCUE

Macayla Burkett is no ordinary private eye. She’s a pet detective, dedicated to tracking down missing dogs and cats. When two famous racing greyhounds disappear and turn up dead, Macayla finds herself in the midst of a much more serious case. And when the thieves target her and threaten her life, she realizes she’s in grave danger—until a ridiculously handsome stranger enters the picture...

Oliver Kelly may look like a male stripper, but his muscles aren’t just for show. The gorgeous Australian is co-owner of a K-9 Search and Rescue service dedicated to saving those in danger. When he and his K-9 partner, an Australian shepherd named Jackeroo, rescue the fiery detective from trouble, the sparks begin to fly. And when they join forces to stop a widespread case of animal theft, it unleashes a torrent of passion that’s impossible to tame...

My rating:

Macayla Burkett isn't having a lucky streak. First, she's held at gunpoint (though the killer doesn't really know she's there, she's filming him with an infrared camera) for the second time in a year (the first time she was actually shot protecting a child and losing her dog in the process), then the two racing greyhounds she's looking for turn up dead and then someone obviously wants to ruin her career (and life) by claiming she's the head of a dognapping ring...and the police are actually buying it.

This book started off rather well in strong in the suspense department, but lost its footing toward the middle and never really found it again. There was just too much going on; Macayla's past experience, the supposed murder she witnessed, a neighborhood bully, he dognapping ring...Toward the end, I barely cared about who the killer was and why.

Let's face it, the characters, their issues, dramas and the lackluster romance didn't help things at all. I didn't like Macayla. She was rather snobbish in her initial interaction with Oliver (the hero), thinking he was a male stripper and that made him somehow "less". Then, when she discovered who he really was, she made an about face and jumped him (not that he was complaining), and then shut down again, pushing him away, as she did everybody (with no apparent reason). Oliver wasn't much better. Yes, he was hot, he was a hero and he loved his dog, but his view of "relationships" and what he expected and wanted from women didn't really work for the romance. That was also a big disappointment, since I didn't feel there was much between the characters except sex and lust.

The meh-ish suspense and disappointing characters and romance certainly didn't help the flow of the story or the pacing, making for a rather bleak reading experience.
