Review: Highlander Unmasked by Monica McCarty

Title: Highlander Unmasked
Series: MacLeods of Skye Trilogy
Author: Monica McCarty

Alex MacLeod’s virile physique, fearsome reputation, and renowned fighting skills have helped him master to perfection the role of a hardened mercenary. On a secret mission to protect his clan, he must keep his true purpose well hidden. But his dangerous endeavor is threatened by a beautiful woman he saves from outlaws, never dreaming she will appear at court and put his plans in jeopardy.

Meg Mackinnon needs a strong husband by her side to defend her clan’s holdings, but her search has been hampered by burning fantasies of the midnight rescuer whose smoldering blue eyes and raw sensuality left her breathless. Alex pretends to be a mercenary with no loyalties, yet he is clearly much more. As Meg challenges Alex to reveal all his secrets, the stakes grow perilously high, especially for the bold woman who dares to unmask a highlander.

My rating:

A woman determined to find a strong husband to keep her clan safe, a man on a secret mission to keep his clan safe. Their paths collide and they'll never be the same.

I'm noticing a pattern here.

Like its predecessor, this would've benefitted from a severe edit hacking off a hefty amount of pages. As it were, we're once again treated to repetition after repetition, loads of contradictory inner musings and behavior and an annoyingly nosy female lead that demanded to know things that were none of her business, kept stumbling into situations that were way out of her league and almost ruined a rebellion. What's lovable about that? Because apparently the hero fell in love with her. Why?

The plot was pretty decent (the brewing rebellion, the spy games...) but it was ruined by the length, the constant repetitions, the incessant will-they won't-they should-they...resulting in plodding pacing and endless unnecessary ballast.
