Fire chief Eric Hawke knows it’s only a matter of time until the next big wildfire. He’s done everything he can to prepare his crews for the inevitable. When high winds turn a small blaze into a raging crown fire that threatens Scarlet Springs, he, Brandon Silver, and the rest of Scarlet FD put their lives on the line to save the town and its citizens. But the one thing Hawke hadn’t planned for was bureaucratic red tape and waffling from higher-ups that could turn this crisis into a catastrophe. When his requests for support go unheeded, he’s faced with the prospect of watching the town he loves burn to ashes.

But sometimes help comes from unexpected places.

Marc Hunter, Julian Darcangelo, and Zach McBride are in the mountains above Scarlet Springs for an interagency training exercise when they see a single wisp of smoke to the west. What begins as a fun day of playing cops and bad guys soon becomes a battle against time, as they join forces with Hawke and members of the Rocky Mountain Search & Rescue Team to save friends trapped by the fire.

Together, they pit their strength and courage against a terrifying and unforgiving force of nature. Will it be enough? Or will the ravenous flames claim lives—and leave the people of Scarlet Springs forever scarred?

My rating:

When a wildfire threatens the town of Scarlet Springs, friends, family and acquaintances work together to save lives and property, forging new and strengthening old bonds...

WHOA!

This was one hell (pun not intended) reunion. It was lovely seeing old friends and new working together toward a common goal—protect Scarlet Springs.

It was great reading about the guys and gals of I-Team and what their lives are after their HEA. Some things never change...There was Joaquin with his camera, finding inventive ways to protect his photos from burning, Marc and Darcangelo's bromace is still going strong, the two still bickering with Zach bemusedly observing, Jack and Nate West still helping whenever they can, Gabe still having his unnatural relationship with gravity...
Then there were the new friends from Scarlet Springs with the most to lose when their town is threatened, each and every one of them helping the best they can...

This book didn't have a main couple or romance (though one blossomed due to the danger one of the parties was in); it was an ensemble story with every character and/or couple having their moment for the reader to get reacquainted and see what they've been up to in the interim. If there was a main character in the story, I'd pick the fire.
A living, breathing entity of its own, an insatiable creature at the core of the book, driving the plot forward, providing drama, peril and suspense, creating and strengthening bonds of friendship and family, providing incentive and serving as catalyst.

The descriptions of the raging inferno were chilling, painting both desolated and heartening pictures, until I had the feeling I was there, fighting to save Scarlet Springs alongside the firefighters and volunteers, standing beside Joaquin as he snapped the iconic shot of Hawke staring down the fire, running from the flames with Austin and the Team, climbing a sheer rock wall with Gabe, dreading searching for remains with Kenzie...

A nail-biting, action-packed page-turner of a book. Loved it!
