Adam Haines was an artist visiting the Fairchild mansion to do some undercover digging, and that was a problem for a man who preferred to be straightforward. An even bigger problem was Kirby Fairchild, daughter of the world-famous painter he'd been sent to investigate. She was part child, part elf, and the most fascinating woman he'd ever encountered.
However, Kirby had a disconcertingly fluid sense of right and wrong—one completely at odds with Adam's own code of ethics. Adam wished he wasn't wrapped quite so tightly around her little finger...
My rating:
Adam Haines comes into the Fairchild manor under false pretenses. Yes, he's an artist who needs a short retreat, yes, the Fairchild collection is stunning...But he's also looking for a stolen Rembrandt as a favor to his cousin who works for an insurance company.
But what could easily be a simple investigation, soon gets complicated by Kirby Fairchild, an eccentric artist herself, who enchants and captures Adam.
It started off nicely with Adam working undercover and the two Fairchilds embroiled in an art-work "emulating" scheme, and the second villain was a big surprise, but everything else sounded rather fake. I don't know how else to describe the feeling, but with the word fake.
There was no feeling of connection to either the story or the characters, some scenes sounded like were set (or written) in a dream-like state, the romance left me cold, and although the conflict was resolved rather quickly, I didn't much care about any of it.
2 stars, contemporary, contemporary romance, harlequin/silhouette, Nora Roberts/J.D. Robb, suspense/mystery/adventure/thriller
