Sergeant Oliver Mackie doesn’t have time for reporters, but he’s making an exception for Leandra Northman. Not because she’s so hot he should arrest her for indecency, but because she might have information he needs to identify the Calendar Killer, a serial murderer who has been terrifying Winnipeg for months.

Leandra needs a source if she’s going to get a seat at the anchor desk. Mackie is the perfect pipeline into the biggest story to hit the city in decades, but she won’t sacrifice him for her career. Not that it matters: even as they get close physically, she can’t break through emotionally.

After the case explodes publicly, Mackie is stunned when it appears Leandra leaked classified information to put herself in the spotlight. Leandra is determined to prove her innocence, and Mackie must decide if catching the bad guy really means he can’t catch a bad girl too.

My rating:

Well, the first one wasn’t a fluke. It was the start of a pattern.

I’m sorry to say, this one did absolutely nothing for me. No interest in the romance, which yet again didn’t reach lukewarm temperatures, no interest in the two leads, who were complete blanks beside the fact he was an asshole and she was a vulture reporter willing to do pretty much anything for a scoop (the fact she drew the line at sleeping with a cop didn’t win her any brownie points)...Not the story that had even less suspense than its predecessor, if that’s possible and still involve a serial killer.

There was no urgency, no danger, no suspense, just a “romance” between a cop and a reporter that created unnecessary and pointless conflict in this story. Space that would’ve been better spent developing a more interesting and intricate suspense plot.
