All Major Patrick MacLean wanted was Christmas with the woman and child who were his family in everything but name. But Captain Samantha Egan has come back from the war a different woman than the one who left - and she doesn't know if she can love him anymore.

But neither of them counted on the determination of a little girl they both call daughter and if Natalie has her wish, her parents may have no idea what's coming for them. It's going to take Christmas miracle to bring these two wounded warriors back from the edge of a broken heart.

My rating:

She came back from was a different person, a shadow of herself, and decided to run, leave behind the man she once loved, out of fear she was empty inside. But she didn't count with her daughter's matchmaking skills and the guy's devotion and perseverance...

This was a sweet, emotional, poignant, sad story of love lost and found.

But...

There's always a but, isn't there?

But I, as usual, had a problem with the heroine. Not the characterization per se. I understood her predicament, her inability and/or unwillingness to share her feelings, to keep everything bottled up, to not let anyone overly close...I understood, because I'm the same, for obviously different reasons, but I got her.

What I didn't get was the inconsistency of how her reasoning was written. At first, she didn't feel anything, a few pages later she was feeling too much, then nothing at all again...Over and over again. First, she didn't love the guy (anymore), then she loved him, then she was afraid to love him...Afraid to feel anything, so she kept all her feeling locked in a box.
But honey, if you know about that box, it doesn't mean you don't feel anything. It means you don't want to feel.

This constant back and forth was jarring, marring an otherwise good story.
