HIS WIFE. HIS BABY. ONE SHOT TO START OVER. HE BETTER NOT MISS
As one of the premier sharpshooters in the world, Deke Cunningham never missed his mark. Only the onetime love of his life, Mindy, could knock him off target. And she just gave him the shock of his life: she's carrying his baby.
Now they are being tracked and hunted by the man they can only presume to be the infamous criminal Novus Ordo. Survival has to be their first priority. Mindy had been drawn to Deke the bad boy, but it's the good man—the protector, the father-to-be—that she needs by her side. A modern-day warrior to watch over her and her baby. Their baby...Now Deke has been given a second chance to get his family in order—and keep them all alive.
My rating:
Even two years after their divorce, Mindy is still Deke Cunningham's only weakness. A weakness a terrorist's sidekick readily exploits, kidnapping Mindy and drawing Deke into a ghost town.
The mission should be easy. Get there, make the bad guys pay, rescue Mindy. Well, it ain't that easy, because Deke ends up bound and gagged in an old hotel basement, alongside his ex-wife. His very pregnant ex-wife.
"So who's the lucky guy?"
"You are."
A surprisingly (judging by my statistics) good HI story. I loved the fact the big, bad, surly, brooding ex-Special Forces guy had one glaring weakness and it was his (I won't say feelings for, because he was too stubborn to admit it) ex-wife, Mindy. As soon as he learned she was in trouble he came charging in—even though she specifically warned him it was a trap. Gotta love a guy who doesn't listen to reason in such situations. 😜
The suspense was edge-of-the-seat and gripping, augmented by the cramped, minimalistic setting of an old mine, the obvious instability of the villain, and the imminent threat of Mindy (in her eight-plus-month pregnancy) delivering her Sprout.
That little guy, though not even born yet, became my favorite character in this little drama/suspense thingy. He was the one who was able to bring everybody to their knees—the villain didn't have the stomach to hurt a pregnant woman, but little Sprout showed what he was made of when it came to his daddy. Deke, the poor guy was in a state of panic from the moment he's learned he would become a dad, until the very last few sentences of the last chapter.
Yep, I rather enjoyed this story, the only thing I regret is the fact it is part of a series. There were so many questions left unanswered it's bugging me like crazy. But not enough to pursue this series to its end (but you never know).
This was a solid story, with well-defined characters, good plot and good pacing.
