Wilderness guide Bethany Darrow was desperate to save her kidnapped sister in Colombia, but lying about having the money to pay dark, mysterious mercenary Xavier Monero would cost her dearly. Especially when their forced proximity during a dangerous jungle rescue unleashed a smoldering, irresistible attraction.
Xavier knew the beautiful American was trouble the second he laid his eyes on her. Taking Bethany on the mission was a risk, and he wasn't prepared for the peril she placed on his heart. Suddenly he wanted more than fortune—he wanted Bethany, body and soul. But everything comes with a price....
My rating:
Bethany Darrow come to Colombia to find a friend's friend who might help her rescue her little sister from the kidnappers that's held Samantha hostage for the past two years.
She enlists the help of Xavier Monero, her friend's friend, a mercenary intimately acquainted with the rebel group. They're holding his sister, Eva. But he's reluctant to help Bethany, because each time he rescues a victim, the group adds the rescued victim's price to the price for Xavier's sister.
Still, she convinces him, by promising to give him the money (half a million bucks) she's raised to save her sister.
The two, flanked by Xavier's two friends, embark on a perilous journey through the jungle, but Bethany's not been completely honest...
Meh. I loved the jungle setting and the premise was good, yet the poor execution ruined it for me. The characters were bland, Bethany was a bit too bitchy, and Xavier quite naive for a hardened merc, and there were absolutely no sparks between them. The pacing was slow, the plot rather hole-y, and even the action scenes that should've liven things up fell short.
Disappointing.
