My rating:

Merinus Tyler is determined to flush Callan Lyons out of his hiding. As a journalist, she knows all about him, including the fact he isn't entirely human, but an experiment of genetic manipulation with animal DNS. She pursues him relentlessly, offering him protection if he goes public with his story...But he just wants to be left alone.

The last method for him to drive her away is a kiss. Unfortunately that kiss triggers something in both of them, a craving defying logic...and human stamina.

But the Tyler family aren't the only ones pursuing Callan. His creators, the Genetic Counsil, want him back at all costs. And now, after the kiss they want Merinus as well. Will Callan be able to protect her and still remain hidden from the world?


Hmmm...My first encounter with the Breed was in the two anthologies, Beyond the Dark and Shifter. Those two stories were so scorching I knew the first in the series was equally explosive, if not more...Unfortunately I was wrong.

This didn't have much of a plot, only a bunch of sex scenes held together by tidbits of information and a few action sequences. Don't get me wrong, I like sex and reading erotica, but for a story to work for me, it has to have a little more than just a sex-crazed couple on a rampage. Maybe if the book were longer, a plot a little thicker and better developed, and the steamy scenes a little further apart and not to similar one to the other, it could've worked a little better. But instead the leads kept moving from one room to the next, screaming, roaring, groaning, moaning in a collage of "mating frenzy" scenes that slowly blended into one, until the last one where I simply skipped the whole thing and went to the *plot* part.

I liked the characters, though, when they weren't "humping like bunnies". Callan was your typical male (they don't need animal DNA to behave like animals), arrogant, domineering, chest-thumping brute convinced he's always right. Merinus was pretty much the same, only in a more feminine way. Having grown up with eight overbearing men (seven brothers and a father), she was well equipped to fight the testosterone poisoning, yet she was sometimes a little too stubborn, bordering on vindictive, without an adequate explanation as to why, making it a little hard to digest and comprehend.

My favorite character in this story was without a doubt Kane with his protective streak and single-minded purpose of bringing the bad guys to justice. At first the reader is kept in the dark as to his motives, but as the story progressed and a ghost from his past appeared, the reason became more than clear and I couldn't help but want to read more. So this first book in the series fell victim to its own cast, the story of a supporting characters taking pretty much over the story of the lead couple...Which would've been a shame if the main story was any good.

Yeah, I'm a little disappointed, but I shall persevere in hopes the rest (a long way to go) will be better, and most certainly looking forward to Kiss of Heat.
